At a glimpse: Sarasvati: Chapter Two
You recognize Sarasvati as the Hindu goddess of knowledge, arts and music, but music fans in Indonesia probably know of another Sarasvati — Risa Saraswati from the Bandung-based electropop outfit Homogenic.

However, this association is no longer relevant since Risa recently announced she had left Homogenic citing artistic differences. Homogenic’s management said in a statement that Risa had decided to resign from Homogenic because of irreconcilable differences between her future plan and that of the band.
Risa, however, remained tight-lipped about why she had left the band that had introduced her to the Indonesian music scene.
But for Rissa, life has gone on since her departure from Homogenic. She continues to write new material and continues playing music as part of her dedication to fans who have demanded new music from her.
And now Rissa is making a return to the limelight with her new seven-track EP. In fact she is also assuming a new moniker as Sarasvati, after the Hindu goddess mentioned above.
“To be honest with you, being a solo artist is something I have been thinking about for a while,” Rissa told The Jakarta Post. With her outstanding vocal range, which some describe as angelic, she will no doubt be a serious contender for the title of Indonesia’s most cutting-edge female solo performer.
Being a solo performer has also allowed Sarasvati to do something she was unable to with Homogenic — write her own material.
“I wrote five songs for this EP. The other two tracks are my take on other people’s songs,” she said.
The new materials however would not be so dissimilar with her outputs with Homogenic. The song contains the trick that she has perfected over the years with the band, the ethereal and dreamy soundscapes that has become the trademark of Homogenic.
“I’m pursuing my own obsession,” she said.
“With this kind of work, I want people to know that every goodbye leaves us with a hole inside. I’m losing some things. But on the other hand, I want to fill that hole by creating Sarasvati.”
So far, Sarasvati has not had a single stage performance and fans can be forgiven for being skeptical of her new project. Can she live up to her old band’s reputation?
“Well, you can expect something theatrical as you would expect from the tale of Sarasvati,” she said with a smile. But one thing is for sure: When it comes to good music, Sarasvati is no newbie.
One of these days, you can probably download her new single “Oh I Never Know” free. Follow her at www.twitter.com/risa_saraswati for more details.
